With food playing such an important role in our dogs behaviour, I thought it would be good to write a little blog post.
39-59% of dogs are overweight or obese, and in a US study 9/10 owners couldn't recogise if their dog was overweight.
Food with poor nutrition can cause or exacerbate behaivour problems, shortern your dogs lives span and have a huge effect on their wellbeing.
It's a huge topic which I will delve more in to and am always happy to discuss with clients but a little bit of 'food' for thought below.
There are so many options about what to feed your dog it can be overwhelming.
Vets are often sponsored by certain brands so may have a slightly skewed opinion on what food is best.
There is no right or wrong way to feed your dog - whatever you feel is best is fine, but you have 3 options really;
- Dry/Wet Food
- Cooked - such as Butternut Box
- Raw - This does require a bit of prior knowledge of ratios but there are plenty of facebook groups and companies that can help.
It's all about personal preference here on what you choose. I personally feed my dogs on raw but this isn't for everyone!
How can I check what I'm feeding?
www.allaboutdogfood.com is going to be your best friend here.
It gives you a nutritional rating of the food you are feeding - the higher the better! It also gives a breakdown of protein, carbs etc
You can also search on your dogs size, age and budget and see what the best available for you would be.
I have spent hours getting lost on this website but food has such an effect on behaviour it's REALLY important.
